## Updating the server

Open the **System** tab.

- **Check for updates** to see whether a new version is available.
- **Install Update** downloads and installs it. The server is unavailable for a minute or two while it installs and restarts. Your school's records are kept.
- Do not close the control panel during an update. On Linux, the page reconnects on its own when the server is back.

Install updates **outside school hours**.

### Database updates

Some updates also update the database that holds your records. The panel shows **Database Update** while this happens, then restarts the server. Do not close the application during it.

**Upgrade failed?** Your records have not been changed. Choose **Try again**, or contact Academium support.

## Keeping your staff's applications up to date

The server keeps its own copies of the **Client** and **Individual** editions. Staff download them from the server's download page, without needing the internet. See [Connecting computers to your school server](https://helpcenter.academium.com.ng/academium-sms/article/sms-connecting-computers-to-the-server.md).

## Maintenance

The **Maintenance** options fix most everyday problems. On Windows, press **Ctrl + I** to open them.

| Option | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **Clear System Cache** | Removes temporary files the server uses to speed things up |
| **Clear Cache & Restart** | Clears the temporary files and restarts. **Fixes most issues.** |
| **Restart Server** *(Windows)* | Restarts without touching any school records. On Linux, use **Restart** at the top of the panel. |
| **Re-run School Setup** *(Windows)* | Makes the school setup run again on the next attempt. Use only if Academium support asks you to. |

If Academium is behaving oddly, try **Clear Cache & Restart** first.

## Logs

The **Logs** tab shows technical records of what the server has been doing. You will not normally need them, but Academium support may ask you for them.

- **Windows:** choose the log (**Server**, **Application**, **Database** or **System**), then **Refresh** or **Clear**.
- **Linux:** choose the log and how many lines to show (50, 200 or 1,000), then **Copy** to paste them into a message to support.

## Version details

The System tab also shows which version of the Server Edition is installed.
