# Transaction Categories

Every transaction belongs to a **category**, such as *Fuel*, *Stationery* or *Donations*. Open **School Accounting → Transaction Categories** and add the ones you need. Each category is one of four kinds:

| Kind | Use for |
| --- | --- |
| **Income** | Money the school earns, such as fees or rent received |
| **Inflow** | Money that comes in but is not earnings, such as a loan or a refund |
| **Expense** | Money the school spends on running costs |
| **Outflow** | Money that goes out but is not an expense, such as a loan repayment |

A category's kind cannot be changed later, and a category that has been used cannot be removed.
