The **tax** pages under **School Accounting → Tax** help you work out staff PAYE, keep track of what to remit, and report tax collected on fees. Tax management needs a plan that includes it.

## Tax settings

Open **Tax Settings** to manage, in one place:

- the **tax bands** used to work out PAYE (each band can be turned on or off; Academium warns about gaps between bands);
- the **deduction types**;
- the **rates**, with a record of every change.

## Staff tax details

For each member of staff, record their **TIN**, **pension rate**, **NHIS**, **life insurance** relief, any custom relief, and whether they are **exempt** (with the type, the dates and a reason).

## Exemptions

Open **Tax Exemptions** to record exemptions with a reason, an optional end date and a supporting document. **Exempt staff** lists who was exempt in each month, and why.

## Monthly PAYE

The tax overview shows, for each month, how much PAYE was **withheld**, how much is **to remit**, and which bands were used. PAYE on payslips is worked out from your bands automatically. See [Pay grades](https://helpcenter.academium.com.ng/academium-sms/article/sms-pay-grades.md).

## Reports

- **PAYE report**
- **Remittance**: a snapshot of what is due to be remitted
- **Fee tax report**: tax collected on fees, by fee type and payment method

## Tax calculator

Enter a gross salary, pension, NHIS and life insurance to see the tax that would be due.
