# Signing in with a staff sign-in code

A **sign-in code** lets a member of staff connect a computer to the school without a school server, or without typing a password. It is the usual way in for staff when the school runs online through the Academium portal.

## What you need

| Code | Length | Where it comes from |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **School code** | 6 characters | The same for everyone at your school. Your administrator can copy it from their **Devices & Access** page. |
| **Your sign-in code** | 8 characters | Issued to you personally by your administrator. |

> **Warning:** Your sign-in code **works once, on one computer**. After that, the computer stays signed in to your account and you unlock it with your PIN. Do not share your code, and type it carefully.

## Signing in

1. In the Individual Edition, choose **Log In**, then **Staff Sign-in Code**.
2. **What is your school's code?** Enter the six-character school code and choose **Continue**.
3. Check that the school shown is yours. If it is not, go back and correct the school code.
4. **Enter your sign-in code.** Type your eight-character code carefully, check it, then choose **Sign In**.
5. Wait while Academium sets up your school's data on the computer, then set your PIN.

## For administrators: issuing a code

1. Open **Devices & Access** from the sidebar.
2. Under **Staff Access**, find the member of staff and issue a sign-in code.
3. Give them the code straight away. **It cannot be shown again.**

The code works once, on one computer, and expires after a short time. You can **Withdraw** a code that has not been used yet. Tell the person the school code too: it is shown at the top of **Staff Access** with a **Copy** button.

## Common issues

**"We could not find a school with that code."** Check the six-character school code. Letters and numbers that look alike are a common mix-up.

**"That sign-in code is not valid."** The code may already have been used, may have expired, or may have been withdrawn. Ask your administrator for a new one.

**"Could not reach the school."** Check your internet connection and try again.
